1 – Categories’ extraction

The “Extract Poi.dat” function enables to extract all the categories from the file Poi.dat file. The extraction goes to the directory “../GestPOI.DAT/Estrazione” and a file for each category contained in the Poi.dat file is created with the format “[ category].poi”. Before the extraction different options are available:

  • It is possible to choose the language of the categories extracted between Italian, English and French. This option has no impact on the extraction content, but is very useful to understand easily categories in its language;
  • It is also possible to choose different formats for files extracted: OV2, ASC, CARTO (* trk and * wpt);
  • The “Log” option enables to have a dedicated log file for each extracted category;
  • The “HTML Report” and “CSV Report (Excel)” options when ticked enable to also save with the extracted files an “extract.html” or “extract.csv”, which contains details of each category (name of the category and a number of associated poi).

In order to extract categories, select the file with the button “Select Poi.Dat” then click on “Extract” to start the extraction process! It is possible during the operation to stop it with the button “Stop”.

2 – Categories’ management

The “Categories Management” function enables to add or remove poi for different categories, from the Poi.dat file before you create the new Poi.dat! To change an existing Poi.dat, it is first of all necessary to extract from Poi.dat file the categories. Once it is done, the directory where all the *.poi are also contains the file poi.lst, which is the configuration file that will be used to create the new the Poi.dat! In order to proceed, select “Categories Management” and click on the button “Load Poi.lst”, then the list will be automatically filled in correspondence with the poi contained in the poi.lst file ! If a category contains poi, you will see at the left of the related icon the “+” symbol. When clicking on it, the tree structure will open with the detailed name of the file that contains the poi of this category. To remove a category, you just have to select the filename and to click on “Remove” (or right-click with the mouse on the name of the file and select “Remove”). When it is done, there is no more “+” and this category will not appear any more in the list of the poi in TomTom. To insert a poi, just select the category you want to add the poi and click on “Insert” (or right-click on the name of the category and select “Insert file”), then an explorer opens and it is possible to choose between three different files type: OV2, ASC or POI. Nota: it is possible to add only one ASC, POI or OV2 file for each category.
To update or add a file to an existing category, just select the category to be updated and click on “Join Ov2”, then select the ov2 file to be added and it will be associated! So if during the asociation there is no error, the new added file appears under the category.
When the Categories list is updated, just click on the button “Save Poi.lst” and the list will be saved while a copy of the original list will also be saved as a poi.lst.bak! Obviously the saved poi.lst file could be opened and updated again only if imported files and those extracted are matching in the “extraction” directory!

3 – Poi.dat compilation

This functionality lets you create a new Poi.dat file in two steps… First step, click on the button “|…|” and select the desired directory and the name you want to give to the file poi.dat (it is recommended to keep the original name whether TomTom will not recognize it). Then click on the “Save” button in order to create the new Poi.dat according to the configuration realized in “2. Categories Management”!
N.B: If a Poi.dat file already exists in the destination directory, you will be asked whether you want to replace it or not!!! Warning: do not replace the original file and take time to previously make a backup before all these operations!!!! We could not be considered as responsible for possible lost data!!!

4 – Merging OV2 files

With this function you can merge several files in OV2 format into a single one! The first operation consists in charging the different files in the grid using the button “Insert OV2”! It is as possible to select files from different directories as to select several files in the same window “Open OV2 files…” simply keeping pressed Shift key or Ctrl key and selecting files you want to insert! Once files are shown in the grid, their size in bytes is indicated. Columns of the grid can be sorted either by filename or by size and then (after merging) it also possible to sort them by number of Poi included in each file individually! Files can also be removed from list when the check box is ticked and while clicking on the button “Remove OV2 selected”. Removed files will only be removed from list but not from the disc! Once all the files to be linked are inserted, just press the button “Merge”, you are now asked where to save the new file. The default name is “ov2_unito.ov2” but it is possible to change it or to replace an existing file by selecting it. So you just have to wait until a message inform you that the file is created!
Merged files with GestPoi.Dat are treated with “MakeOv2” and can thus be directly inserted in the TomTom map directory!

5 – Treatment OV2 with DumpOv2 and Make Ov2

The function “Make All Ov2” let the possibility to treat all the Ov2 files at a time! This process is a solution for many TomTom versions that have a problem with the voice which is scratching during navigation! In that cas it is understood that we can insert all the desired files in the grid with the button “Insert OV2” in only one to treat all the files. During the process it is possible to select several files in the “open OV2 files…”! To remove a file in the list, just select the file you want to remove and click on the button “Remove OV2 selected” (not removed from disc, only in the grid of the program).

Above the grid, two options are available:

  • “Overwrite original file” that replaces all the original files (without treatment) by the treated files even if they come from different directories. Thanks to this procedure, inserted files in the grid will become all treated once clicked on the “MakeOv2” button;
  • “Other destination” lets you save all the files (treated), even those from different directories, to a specific one. The destination directory must be specified before the treatment to be launched with the |… | button under the options! So, inserted files will not come to overwrite original ones, which will then not be modified but will be pasted in the selected directory.

It is possible to treat all ov2 files contained in the Map directory or directly from the Memory card reader connected to the PC. This procedure can also be used in order to update one or more categories of the Memory Card… for example if one or more files are downloaded on the hard disk, it is possible to import all of them in the program. To do this, select the option “Other destination” and indicate the card path of the Memory board (for example E:/Italie-map”) and press the button” MakeOv2 “! In this mode all the inserted files in the program will be updated and will overwrite those contained on the Memory Card! Nota: this method is useful to only update existing categories because the program does not update the icon coming from a bmp associated to an external POI… I will think of it for a forthcoming version!
